How Splitly works
Four steps, and none of them involve a spreadsheet. Here is what happens at each one and what we do behind the scenes.
Start a group and invite the others
A flat, a trip, an event, or a single dinner. Name it, pick the currency everyone will settle in, and add the people involved. Share the link on WhatsApp and they join in a tap -- or start with no signup at all and save it to an account later.
- Invite links expire after two weeks and can be revoked at any time
- Nobody sees the group's expenses until they have joined
- Roles: the owner controls the group, admins manage members and expenses, members add their own
Add expenses, or photograph the bill
Typing an expense takes about fifteen seconds: amount, what it was for, who paid. Or photograph a restaurant bill and we pull out the merchant, the line items, CGST and SGST, the service charge and the total. Every field stays editable before it is saved.
- Works in any currency, and keeps the original amount exactly as it was paid
- Cash, UPI, credit card, debit card, bank transfer or wallet
- If the network drops mid-entry, what you typed is kept on your device
Split it however the group actually works
Equally is the default because it is usually right. When it is not: exact amounts, percentages, shares (handy for couples sharing a room), or item by item. Assign each dish to whoever ordered it and the tax spreads itself in proportion.
- The split always reconciles exactly to the bill, down to the last paisa
- A ₹100 bill across three people becomes 33.34, 33.33 and 33.33, never 33.33 three times
- Anyone can be left out of a particular expense without leaving the group
Settle up over UPI
We total everything, net off who paid for what, and work out the fewest payments that clear the group. Each one comes with a UPI deep link and QR with the amount filled in, ready for Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm or any UPI app.
- Cash settlements are recorded the same way and clear the balance
- A balance clears only when the person receiving the money confirms it
- Opening a UPI link is never treated as proof that the payment went through
